NKU Holds Smart Sensing Interdisciplinary Science Forum 2023

      Smart Sensing Interdisciplinary Science Forum 2023 was held in Jinnan Campus from October 27 to 29. More than 40 scholars from over 20 universities and research institutes across China participated in the forum.

      Yang Kexin, Executive Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of Nankai University, met with experts attending the forum and delivered a speech at the opening ceremony. Sun Licheng, CAS Academician and Professor of Westlake University, Bu Xianhe, CAS Academician and Professor of Nankai University, Lu Shuangying, a member of the Party Leadership Group of Tianjin Science and Technology Association and first class inspector, Liu Qiang, director of the First Division of Physical Science of the Department of Mathematical and Physical Sciences of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), Jiang Xiangwei, director of the Condensed Matter Physics Project of the First Division of Physical Science of the Department of Mathematical and Physical Sciences of the NSFC, and representatives of the NKU School of Materials Science and Engineering and the Scientific Research Department were present at the forum.

      Yang Kexin delivered a welcome speech at the forum and expressed sincere gratitude for the arrival of the experts. Yang said that since the 100th anniversary, Nankai University has established 8 interdisciplinary centers including intelligent sensing on the basis of optimizing the existing disciplinary layout, in order to further promote interdisciplinary and talent cultivation, and generate new disciplinary growth points. Yang believed that the convening of this forum would play a positive role in further promoting academic exchanges, enhancing scientific research collaboration, and promoting interdisciplinary research.

      Lu Shuangying pointed out in his speech that the CPC Tianjin Municipal Committee and municipal government attach great importance to the research and development of interdisciplinary science. Tianjin Science and Technology Association is also actively building a platform for interdisciplinary cooperation and exchanges for scientific researchers, helping universities and research institutes in Tianjin to develop innovative achievements and solve problems such as bottleneck technology. Lu stressed that this forum can provide a good academic exchange and cooperation platform for attending scholars, and continuously improve the level of interdisciplinary scientific research in Tianjin through in-depth exchanges and cooperation.

      Liu Qiang said in his speech that interdisciplinary science is an important opportunity for technological innovation, for a majority of revolutionary and disruptive technologies come from interdisciplinary fields. The Physical Science of the Department of Mathematical and Physical Sciences of the NSFC attaches great importance to the interdisciplinary integration of mathematics and physics with other disciplines such as materials, chemistry and life sciences. It will further strengthen top-level design and team organization, establish a multidisciplinary integration platform, and assist in the development of interdisciplinary science in China.

      Bu Xianhe introduced in his speech the background of establishment and research objectives of the Smart Sensing Interdisciplinary Science Center of Nankai University. He hoped that participating experts could provide advisable suggestions for the development of the Interdisciplinary Science Center through this forum, and conduct in-depth exchanges and cooperation to enhance understanding and friendship.

      In the conference report, Academician Sun Licheng gave a report titled Catalytic Water Decomposition to Produce Solar Fuel - From Natural to Artificial Photosynthesis. In the report, he elaborated on the importance of interdisciplinary research based on his over thirty years of research experience, and encouraged scholars from different fields to work together to solve key scientific problems and major national strategic needs.

      Outstanding experts and scholars from various fields such as physics, chemistry, life sciences, materials science, information science and interdisciplinary science were invited to this forum, including Professor Jin Guoxin from Fudan University, Professor Fu Honggang, former President of Heilongjiang University, Professor Jiang Yong, Executive Vice President of Tiangong University, Professor Zhang Xiaobing, Dean of the College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering of Hunan University, Professor Hou Yanglong, Dean of the School of Materials at Sun Yat-sen University, and Professor Wang Jianbo from Peking University, Professor Huang Yunhui from Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Professor Wei Zidong from Chongqing University gave over 30 representations to NKU teachers and students. Their presentations, from basic synthetic chemistry to advanced energy material design and from physical mechanisms in biological processes to innovative methods for anti-tumor treatment, introduced relevant research progress from interdisciplinary perspectives and expounded the significance of interdisciplinary science in today's scientific world. During discussion on the forum, experts conducted exchanges on the construction and development of interdisciplinary science, and contributed advisable suggestions for the development of interdisciplinary science and talent cultivation in Nankai University.

      This Interdisciplinary Science Forum was organized by the Smart Sensing Interdisciplinary Science Center of Nankai University and co-organized by the School of Materials Science and Engineering.
