School of Materials Science and Engineering

Nankai University (NKU)'s Materials Science discipline originated in the 1950s. With decades of meticulous cultivation and relentless exploration, it has developed a robust materials science system with distinctive characteristics, laying a solid foundation for cultivating outstanding talents and propelling scientific progress in the field.

In response to China's advanced material development strategy and the demands of the rapidly evolving materials science landscape, NKU established the School of Materials Science and Engineering & National Institute for Advanced Materials in July 2015. In 2017, the "Materials Science and Engineering" discipline was selected into the first "Double First-Class" initiative disciplines development list and was once again included in the second "Double First-Class" initiative disciplines development list in 2022. These recognitions provide strong support and development momentum for the School and its discipline to rank among the world-class.

At present, NKU's materials discipline has ascended to the 60th position globally in the ESI rankings (4.04‰), with the average citation frequency and total citation times of academic papers ranking at the forefront of the global academic community. The School boasts a comprehensive professional discipline system, an excellent faculty team, high-level teaching and research platforms, and top-notch scientific research achievements.

Its "Materials Chemistry" major has been designated as a national first-class undergraduate major construction point, and the School offers comprehensive master's and doctoral programs, as well as post-doctoral research stations for this major. Our faculty includes 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 7 national-level leading talents, and 17 national-level young talents, with national-level talents comprising 30% of full-time teachers.

The School is home to 6 research institutes/centers, 1 national-level chemical experimental teaching demonstration center, 1 material science experimental teaching center, and 1 large-scale public instrument platform. It has played a significant role in the establishment and development of several key scientific research platforms, including the Higher Education Disciplinary Innovation and Talent Recruitment Base of Inorganic Solid Materials and Energy Chemistry, the National Collaborative Innovation Center of Chemical Science and Engineering (Tianjin), and the Key Laboratory of Advanced Energy Materials Chemistry of the Ministry of Education. With a core concept of high-quality development focused on internal growth, the School has achieved remarkable results in supporting national strategies and driving scientific research innovation. It boasts over 600 papers published in top journals, including 3 in Science, and 2 disciplinary scientific research achievements that have won the second prize of the National Natural Science Award along with more than 10 other provincial and ministerial awards.
