The National First-class Materials Discipline Construction and Development Forum was held in Tianjin from October 19 to 21. More than 90 deans and experts and scholars from over 30 universities across China participated in this forum. Yu Shuhong, Academician of the CAS, Bu Xianhe, Academician of the CAS and Dean of the School of Materials Science and Engineering of Nankai University, Hu Wenping, Executive Vice President of Tianjin University, Li Jing, Vice President of Nankai University, Wang Huiyuan, Vice President of Hebei University of Technology, Jiang Yong, Executive Vice President of Tiangong University, and Li Yue, Vice President of Tiangong University attended the forum.
Hu Wenping pointed out in his speech that this forum will hopefully promote the continuous improvement of materials science, strengthen academic exchanges, further accelerate the construction of first-class disciplines, inject fresh vitality into the innovation and development of China's materials field, and jointly promote the high-quality development of the materials science.
Li Jing stressed in his speech that materials science, as the core of modern engineering science and technology, has a direct bearing on China's industrial upgrading, economic development and national security. He hopes that this forum will provide a broad communication platform for the construction and development of first-class materials science, and jointly foster the takeoff of materials science in China.
Bu Xianhe said in his speech that this forum is targeted at boosting the innovative development of national first-class materials discipline, satisfying national strategic needs, exchanging ideas for the development of materials discipline, and contributing the strength of the materials discipline to building a leading country in education, technology and science, and talent.
Academician Yu Shuhong gave a presentation titled Frontiers and Interdisciplinary Science of Biomimetic Materials Science, in which he, based on his research field and achievements, explained the importance of developing interdisciplinary research. Meanwhile, he stressed we should learn from the Nature and cultivate talents in scientific research, discover and solve key scientific problems in seemingly less touched subjects.
Professor He Chunnian, Dean of the School of Materials Science and Engineering of Tianjin University, Professor Lin Yuanhua, Dean of the School of Materials Science and Engineering of Tsinghua University, Professor Zeng Haibo, Dean of the School of Materials Science and Engineering of Nanjing University of Science and Technology, Professor Huang Yi, Vice Dean of the School of Materials Science and Engineering of Nankai University, Professor Wang Huiyuan, Vice President of Hebei University of Technology, Professor Liu Weishu, Deputy Director of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering of Southern University of Science and Technology, Professor Wang Tongmin, Executive Vice Dean of the Graduate School of Dalian University of Technology, Professor Zhang Zhiming, Vice Dean of the School of Materials Science and Engineering of Tianjin University of Technology, and Professor Liu Gang, Vice Dean of the School of Materials Science and Engineering of Wuhan University of Technology delivered presentations titled “Report on the Construction of New Engineering Disciplines in Materials Science at Tianjin University”, “Innovative Cultivation of High-level Graduate Students in Materials Science at Tsinghua University”, “Cultivation Model and Practice of Top-notch Talents in Materials Science through the Integration of Science and Education and Nurturing of Career and Mental Capabilities“, “Progress Report on the Construction of World-Class Disciplines in Materials Science and Engineering at Nankai University”, “Report on Progress of Advanced Light Alloy Research at Hebei University of Technology”, and Reflection on Interest Oriented Talent Cultivation in Materials Science”, “Some Reflections and Practices on the Integration of Industry and Education in Education – Based on Dalian University of Technology as an Example”, “Report on the Construction of First Class Disciplines in School of Materials Science and Engineering at Tianjin University of Technology”, and “Innovation and Practice of World First-class Disciplines in Materials Science and Engineering at Wuhan University of Technology” respectively, and talked about the construction of new engineering disciplines in the field of materials science, innovative cultivation of high-level graduate students, top-notch talent cultivation models, as well as innovation and practice in the construction of first-class disciplines.
During the forum discussion, experts also exchanged their views on the construction and development of first-class materials discipline, discussed the reform of higher education and the cultivation of top-notch innovative talents, and reached a consensus on the connotation and future development of materials discipline. This forum provided a valuable opportunity for participating experts to learn from each other and promote mutual progress, contributed significantly to promoting the construction of materials science as a discipline, innovative talent nurturing, interdisciplinary integration, and strengthening university cooperation.
This forum was jointly organized by the School of Materials Science and Engineering of Nankai University and the School of Materials Science and Engineering of Tianjin University, and co-organized by the School of Materials Science and Engineering of Hebei University of Technology, the School of Material Science and Engineering of Tiangong University, and the School of Materials Science and Engineering of Tianjin University of Technology.
