Nature Conference: Physical Properties of Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) was held on the Jinnan Campus, Nankai University. The Vice President of Nankai University, Prof. Kai Wang; Chair of the conference and the dean of School of Materials Science and Engineering, Prof. Xian-He Bu; the representative of Nature Publishing Group and editor-in-chief of Communications Chemistry, Dr. Victoria Richards attended the opening ceremony and gave their opening remarks.

President Wang acknowledged the attendance of all invited speakers, scientists and colleagues, and gave his special thanks to their generous support to Nankai. President Wang introduced the general information of Nankai University and School of Materials Science and Engineering, as well as the recent exciting advances in materials science and chemistry at Nankai. He detailed the research topics in the School of Materials Science and Engineering, which mainly focuses on new energy materials, catalytic materials, rare earth materials, opto-electro-magnetic materials, carbon materials and polymers. He mentioned that Nankai is keen to scientific innovations and undergraduate education, and he hopes this important conference could facilitate the interactions and collaborations for MOF scientists between Nankai and the world.

Prof. Xian-He Bu gave his opening remarks on behalf of the School of Materials Science and Engineering. He stressed that MOFs are a new class of hybrid materials built from metal ions or clusters and organic ligands and can many exhibit interesting physical properties. This first Nature conference focusing on MOFs would bring together leading international researchers to discuss current and emerging themes on the physical properties of these coordination polymers, and explore new research directions and frontiers.

Dr. Victoria Richards spoke on the opening ceremony on behalf of the Nature Publishing Group. She gave her special thanks to Nankai University for hosting such an important conference in the special year of both the centennial anniversary of Nankai University and the 150th anniversary of Nature. She also mentioned that a fundamental and interdisciplinary understanding of MOFs is key to their future advances and applications, and hoped the conference could excite new scientific connections and friendships within the MOF community and beyond.

The conference aims to foster the interaction and connection for MOF scientists between China and the world, and show the recent advances in MOFs of Nankai University. The conference runs from 19th to 21st-November-2019 and brings together around 350 chemists, materials scientists, physicists and engineers from 15 countries to discuss common interests and multidisciplinary ideas. In the program, there are 7 plenary and 22 keynote lectures, as well as 50 posters. Topics cover energy, optics, electronics, optoelectronics, mechanical properties, magnetism, phase transitions, ferroelectricity and multiferroicity,
